What performance does an insulated glass unit add over single-pane glass?

An insulated glass unit, or IGU, is an assembly of two or more glass panes separated by a spacer bar and sealed around the perimeter, with the sealed cavity typically filled with air or an inert gas such as argon. The sealed cavity is what gives an IGU its thermal and acoustic performance advantage over single-pane glass, reducing heat transfer through the facade and lowering sound transmission from outside. KH Glass Group assembles insulated glass units in-house, combining panes produced on its own tempering and lamination lines so an IGU can pair, for example, a laminated outer pane with a tempered inner pane inside a single sealed unit. Assembling the unit in the same facility that processes the individual panes keeps dimensional tolerances consistent across the build-up and avoids the added handling that separate suppliers for tempering, lamination, and assembly would require. IGUs from this line are specified for facade systems where thermal performance is part of the project requirement.
